bioaccumulation in marine birds

چکیده
The aim of this work was the determination of Po, U, U, Pu and Pu concentration in marine birds which permanently or temporally live in the southern Baltic Sea coast. We chose 11 species of seabirds: three species permanently residing at southern Baltic Sea, four species of wintering birds and three species of migrating birds. The results show that analyzed radionuclides are non-uniformly distributed in the marine birds. The highest activities of Po were observed in feathers, muscles and liver. The highest uranium content was found in liver, rest of viscera and feathers, while plutonium in the digestion organs and feathers. Omnivore seabirds accumulated more polonium, plutonium than species that feed on fish, while herbivore seabirds accumulated more uranium than carnivore.

Metal bioaccumulation in Persian sturgeon after sublethal exposure
Tissue metal accumulations (gills, liver, kidney and muscle) in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) were compared folowing exposure to sublethal levels of waterborne Cd (50, 400 and 1000 μg•L-1) after periods of 1, 2, 4 and 14 days. The obtained results indicate that at the end of 4 and 14 days of exposure, total tissue cadmium concentration followed the pattern: liver > gill > kidney > muscl...
متن کاملCharacterization of 241Pu occurrence, distribution, and bioaccumulation in seabirds from northern Eurasia
The paper presents unique data of plutonium (241)Pu study in seabirds from northern Eurasia, permanently or temporally living at the southern Baltic Sea coast. Together, ten marine birds species were examined, as follows: three species that permanently reside at the southern Baltic, four species of wintering birds, and three species of migrating birds; 366 samples were analyzed. The obtained re...
متن کاملPreliminary results on trace element levels in three species of seabirds from the western Indian Ocean
As top predators of pelagic food webs, marine birds naturally bioaccumulate essential and nonessential elements. Levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) were determined in the liver, kidneys and muscles of three species of marine birds found on Réunion Island: Barau’s Petrel (Pterodroma baraui), Audubon’s Shearwater...
متن کاملBioaccumulation of Metals in Tissues of Marine Animals, Part II: Metal Concentrations in Animal Tissues
The bioaccumulation of metals in an animal depends on a multitude of factors: biotic ones, like its body dimensions and mass, age, sex, diet, metabolism, and position in the trophic web; and abiotic ones, such as the distribution of metals in its environment, salinity, temperature, and pH of the water, habitat type, and interactions with other metals. But it is diet that has the greatest influe...
متن کاملBioaccumulation, biotransformation and trophic transfer of arsenic in the aquatic food chain.
The occurrence, distribution, speciation, and biotransformation of arsenic in aquatic environment (marine and freshwater) have been studied extensively by several research groups during last couple of decades. However, most of those studies have been conducted in marine waters, and the results are available in a number of reviews. Speciation, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation of arsenic in...
